How to Get Started WFPB Resources
But where to begin?
Article by Victoria Lostaunau , June 14, 2023
Once you have decided to explore a whole food lifestyle, sorting through all the information can be overwhelming. For me, I chose to jump in 100% when I started to address a sudden diagnosis of Type-2 diabetes under control (You can read My Story here). When I was first diagnosed, my A1c was 12.6. Two years and a WFPB (Whole Food Plant Based) lifestyle change later, I am now at 6.1 and completely off of insulin.
As the years have passed, one of the most important things I learned is that each body and journey is unique. Your journey will be different from mine, and you will learn what foods work best for you and decide how much you want to change. Over time, I practice what I call 90/10. This means that 90% or more of what I eat is WFPB, and 10% or less I will eat anything. As time passes, I am less likely to choose anything processed. It no longer tastes the same, but there is no failure when I do. There was only a choice I made of what to put in my mouth at that moment.
First and foremost, always be kind to yourself. I have learned to change my inner dialog from critical and hurtful to speaking to myself the way I would to a dear friend going through some things. You know what I mean? The first step on any healing journey (and often the hardest) is to think of yourself as a beloved friend, be gentle with yourself and remember lifestyle change is not a diet and includes more than just your relationship with food. If you sprinkle cheese on something or decide to order fries when you go out, the world won't end, and all your hard work does not vanish. That's the 90/10 when you let yourself know you can have whatever, and every bite is a choice you make. You are empowered. You are in control of your health journey.
I had so much support from my family and friends in my journey from disease to health. I decided to be a source of that encouragement and support for others. If you are thinking of starting a WFPB lifestyle change or a whole food approach(minimally refined meat, fish, eggs), I encourage you to check out the great resources and information that helped me get started on the path to WFPB life.
So what were the first two and most important tools I started with? Simple, a blank journal and a book (link below). Since that day, I have found so many great books and resources that I will share with you each day in this Blog, these first two tools are what I started with, and I encourage you to get your own, and let's get to it.
With gratitude, Victoria
Fiber Fueled: The Plant-Based Gut Health Program for Losing Weight, Restoring Your Health, and Optimizing Your Microbiome
This book was my introduction to the microbiome inside us that is the foundation of our bodies. Easy to read, and changed the way I understand what food does today to create my bodies health tomorrow.
